In a particular moving gesture, Santina braided the child's hair during post-mortem care
My name is Dana Tabib. I am the Nurse Manager for the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Unit. I would like to nominate Santina Fraizer for the Broward Health Medical Center and Salah Foundation Children's Hospital DAISY Award. Her journey began as a Patient Care Associate, where she quickly became known for her calm presence and empathetic touch.
While pursuing her nursing degree, Santina transferred to the Pediatric Emergency Department, where she continues to make a meaningful impact on children and families during some of their most stressful and vulnerable moments.
Upon graduating from nursing school, her heart guided her back home to the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Unit, where her passion for children and families facing complex diagnoses could shine even brighter. Returning as a nurse, she brought with her the clinical expertise she had gained but also a deepened sense of purpose and dedication. Her growth as a PHO RN is truly amazing.
Over the past year, she has received the PHO Hot Dog Award. This is a leadership award that recognizes staff who have gone above and beyond. She continues to pursue educational achievement by achieving her Clinical Ladder level III, attending BHLU classes, and presenting a peer module on bone marrow aspiration. Santina demonstrates the BHMC/SFCH mission statement by being a champion for a healthier community by volunteering her time at her children's school. She has a unique gift for building meaningful relationships that leave a lasting, positive impression on our patients and their families, who often ask for her by name.
Recently, while floating to the PICU, Santina immediately recognized one of our former patients who had been admitted. Because of the strong relationship she had built during the patient's time on the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Unit, the family instinctively turned to her for comfort and support during this incredibly difficult time.
As the patients' condition worsened and they ultimately lost their battle with sickle cell disease, Santina quietly stepped in to assist the PICU team and the grieving family with post-mortem care. With tenderness and respect, she opened a room across the hall on the PHO unit and welcomed the family to gather, grieve, and support one another.
In a particular moving gesture, Santina braided the child's hair during post-mortem care - something the family deeply wished to do but felt too overcome by grief to manage themselves. Through this simple act, she honored the child's dignity and created a lasting memory of compassion for the family.
Santina's actions embody what it means to provide holistic, patient-and family-centered care. Her ability to form meaningful connections ensures that our patients and their loved ones feel valued, comforted, and supported through both joyful and heartbreaking moments.
