I have been in the hospital for almost a month, and my nurse, Santiago, has the best bedside manner. He never lets my concerns go without a discussion. He actually hears me. He has never made me, as a paraplegic woman, feel uncomfortable and treats me like a person. He addressed all of my concerns and doubts, as well as taking care of me physically.

The day before my second surgery, I wasn't feeling myself. I was super frustrated and just wanted to wash my hair. Unfortunately, my injury prevents me from sitting up on my own. I was struggling to brush my tangled hair that had gotten very tangled because I use my head to move when I am lying down. That night, Santiago and his assistant helped me wash my hair and brush out the tangles. I understand that it is all part of the job, but if you had limited body mobility and were in a hospital, unable to take a real shower for almost three weeks, you tend to get a rollercoaster of emotions.

I was fortunate enough to have Santiago the night after my second surgery as well. He looked at me and asked, "How are you doing? Do you need me to do anything for you?" I had a rough morning after the surgery, and the pain was horrible. I felt like I was hit by a truck. My family couldn't stay long that evening. I was so sad, and when he saw me about to cry, he asked again, "Are you sure I can't help you with anything? I feel like you are in a vulnerable state right now, and I just want you to know that I am here for you." That man made me feel safer than I have ever felt when my family wasn't there. He took time to ask me questions to understand what works for me and my leg spasms, etc.

Santiago, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for the help and care you showed me, your professionalism, and kind words.
