She started a bag with all of his little NICU mementos to help us remember where we started and look back on how far we've come.
In the first month of our son being in the NICU, we were scared, nervous, anxious, riddled with anxiety, and all of the other emotions a first-time parent can feel. With our son being born at 27 weeks, we weren't sure what the odds were, how he would survive, and what our lives would look like for the next little bit. While we are still early in our journey and have a ways to go, we feel so loved and supported by our nurse, Sandra. She has been a rock throughout the process, coming by and checking on our son even when she's not his assigned nurse. She made his first craft because I was scared I wouldn't be able to capture his footprint while he was still so small. She started a bag with all of his little NICU mementos to help us remember where we started and look back on how far we've come. She has made us feel seen, loved, and supported; has motivated us; has reminded us of the roller coaster a stay can be; and has been a steadfast face when things can be so scary.
While we don't know exactly when our son can come home, we do know that when we cannot be there, we have someone like Sandra there who will check up on our son and ensure that his care and his well-being are of the utmost importance. She has reminded us that he will be amazing and have all the opportunities any other child has. We appreciate her love and support so much, and we will always be so grateful and remember her as we go on our journey and in our lives. Thank you doesn't seem enough to say what we feel she has done for our family and how she has made us feel, but we're hoping that with an award such as this, she will continue to go on and inspire other patients and other families as she grows in her nursing journey and beyond. This job is not easy, and it takes a very special soul to be called to be a nurse in the NICU. We are so grateful to have someone like Sandra, and we recommend her for an award; she is more than deserving. She has truly gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that not just our son but we, his parents, are taken care of and know there is support and love in such a scary situation. We value her work ethic and her call, and know that she is a huge reason our son has the chance to come home soon.
