Samantha Quiroz is a great nurse and colleague who consistently fosters genuine connections with both her peers and her patients. I have seen this before, but the most recent event was very touching, and the story should be shared.

We recently admitted a patient who had a MVC in Mexico that resulted in severe injuries to herself and her spouse, who was hospitalized in Mexico, and the death of her two young children. As we have continued to follow this case for care coordination, Samantha learned that the patient planned to return to Mexico at discharge, since that is where all her family is. Her family and church members were actively trying to find nurses in Mexico to assist with her care, including complex wound care. Samantha was concerned about their finding adequate care and assisted in connecting them with nursing school colleagues in Mexico to ensure continuity of care. When Samantha visited the patient to discuss this plan, she went beyond the physical needs and asked how she was doing and what she would normally be doing as a past-time if she were not hospitalized. The patient expressed that her biggest pastime was spending time with her children. Samantha continued to speak with her and connect with her, and learned that she had not had access to a phone since hers had been removed upon admission due to reminders about her children. Samantha advocated and secured a phone for the patient, and she has now been able to speak directly with her parents and spouse. Samantha also wanted the patient to have something to do while in her hospital room to help with her grief and mental health during her extended hospital stay. Samantha provided her with a blank journal to use as she wishes, coloring books, and a book to read. She has continued to follow up with the patient and provide warm support to her during such a challenging time. She has connected with her beyond a superficial level, providing the patient with genuine kindness and empathy.
