The impact her kindness, humor, and encouragement had on me is one I will remember for the rest of my life.
When I had my first child it was a traumatic situation. I was neglected, ignored, and just all around made out to be a burden. When I fell pregnant again I, unfortunately, miscarried. I asked if they could cancel my upcoming appointments as to not be reminded of my loss; they still called and sent emails about upcoming prenatal care. A few months later, I once again became pregnant and once again lost the baby. I again asked to cancel appointments and again, ignored.
When I became pregnant with my 2nd child, I switched health providers and clinics. My prenatal care was outstanding, but I was still very nervous about delivery and after care. Every single nurse that was there was AMAZING! Each one better than the last. Then I met my nurse Sam. Please note that I am crying writing this nomination. With my first, all I wanted was to breastfeed. I spent thousands on pumps, supplements, and supplies, and I just couldn't do it. I fell into a nasty depression over it. It has been something I have carried with me for three years. Not being able to provide the way you want for your child is the hardest thing a new mom can go through. Sam encouraged me and kept it all lighthearted. She got right in there and spent the time with me and showed me what I needed to do. I am now able to feed my son in a way I never thought I could.
Beyond that she treated me like a person and made me feel cared for and supported all around. When she was in the room it felt like a friend I have known for years. There is good bedside manner, and then there is HER bedside manner. I went from being completely broken and traumatized by my daughter's birth to having the best memories possible with my son. Words can never express what she did for my family and me and how she was the second-best part of my birthing journey (the first being my son). The impact her kindness, humor, and encouragement had on me is one I will remember for the rest of my life. I understand to some, this is just basic care and not an epic story, but to me, this is the story of how someone just doing their job the way they always have has made a long-lasting impression in my life.
An award like this, in my eyes, should go to someone who goes to work and puts their heart into it. Caring for strangers and treating them like loved ones is a gift. So, I ask you to consider Sam for this award because she truly deserves it.
