Samantha DeBeltz, BSN, RN
I am writing to formally recognize a nurse who cared for me during my recent hospital stay. Her care went far beyond her required obligations, and the impact she had on my experience is something I won’t easily forget.
From the very beginning, she truly listened to me. She advocated for my needs and preferences, especially when it came to adjustments in my medications and diet to help make me more comfortable. When I explained that a particular med made me feel sick and I didn’t want to take it, she didn’t judge me or dismiss my concerns. Instead, she respected my feelings, took me seriously, and worked to ensure my voice was heard.
What stood out the most was how she treated me as a person, not just a patient. She understood me; she took time to connect with me, joked around with me, and brought moments of lightness to what was a very difficult time. Because of her warmth and empathy, I never felt like I was a burden or just another task in her busy day.
She also paid close attention to my physical limitations and respected my independence. She allowed me to do as much for myself as I was able, while still offering assistance when needed. Even when it would have been quicker and easier for her to complete a task herself, she patiently allowed me the time to do what I could on my own. That choice may have taken more time in her already busy schedule, but it preserved my dignity, strengthened my confidence, and helped me maintain a sense of control during my long hospitalization.
Her compassion, professionalism, patience, and advocacy made an enormous difference in my comfort and overall experience. Nurses like her are the heart of healthcare, combining clinical excellence with genuine human kindness!
