Beyond her clinical skill, what stood out the most was how she connected with our son.
My son was brought into our 6W room from the PICU. The first person who welcomed us was Sam. She went above and beyond and was a nurse who we had to make sure that my son was not only comfortable, but listened to, heard, and understood all of his needs! She truly embodied the Nightingale creed; I solemnly pledge myself to the service of humanity and will endeavor to practice my profession with conscience and with dignity. I will maintain, by all the means in my power, the honor and noble tradition of my profession. The total health of my patients will be my first consideration. Thank you, Sam, for having our backs! Our family thanks you!! You make a difference!

We would like to nominate Samantha Barnett for the DAISY Award in recognition of the outstanding care she provided to our 4-year-old son during his hospitalization for hypoglycemia. Hospital stays can be frightening for anyone, but especially for a young child who doesn’t fully understand what’s happening. Miss Sam made all the difference. Throughout his stay, our son had to endure frequent blood draws and finger pokes, which could have been a very traumatic experience for a child his age. Instead, thanks to Miss Sam, those moments became easier to bear. She showed incredible patience, taking the time to gently explain each procedure to him in a way that he could understand. She made sure he knew why it was necessary, and by doing so, helped ease his anxiety and fear. Beyond her clinical skill, what stood out the most was how she connected with our son. She took the time to get to know him and his interests, his favorite characters, and made him feel seen and valued, not just like a patient. That personal connection brought comfort not only to our son but to us as his parents. In a stressful and uncertain time for our family, Miss Sam provided not only expert care but also kindness, compassion, and humanity. She embodies everything a nurse should be, and we are deeply grateful for the role she played in our son's care and recovery. She is so deserving of this recognition.
