He spoke to him as if he were his own father. He got a washcloth and washed his face to redirect him, he resettled his feet boots over and over when my Dad was getting annoyed with them.
My father has had many trips to this hospital, and this was the first time being intubated and extubated. He was scared and the tube was hurting him as they started weaning him. Sam took extra care to calm my Dad. He held his hand and told him to "look at me M, I'm here, I will help you get through this". My Dad kept trying to pull at the tube - Sam gently told him no and redirected his hand. He spoke to him as if he were his own father. He got a washcloth and washed his face to redirect him, he resettled his feet boots over and over when my Dad was getting annoyed with them. Sam never acted like HE was annoyed, but continued to give my Dad, soft calm redirection. This was so amazing to me. I wish all nurses could treat patients like it's THEIR family with kindness, understanding, and such compassion! Because I knew he was with Sam, I actually could go home, relax a little, after many nights lying awake worrying about my Dad in the hospital. Sam is an Extraordinary Nurse!
