Do you recall the story, or rather the legacy of Patch Adams? Yes, the man Robin Williams portrayed in the movie about Dr. Hunter Adams, this is who Salena reminds me of! She is witty, humorous, and smart. She demonstrated great attentiveness to my condition and interacted with me as though we knew one another for many years. She congratulated me on my surprise pregnancy and believes that “I will be a great mother and have a happy pregnancy.” She was so happy for me in that moment. Her jokes about motherhood gave me valuable insight into my future.

Salena’s bedside manner was remarkable. Not only did she open the blinds to my window and sit where she could watch me if anything happened, but she also catered to my needs before I had to request them. This, to me, is a sign of a wonderful nurse who is guided by her intuition. Her strength in life is mirrored in her work. I remember sleeping peacefully after a long night in the ER, and Salena’s gentle touch waking me up to transfer rooms. She whispered my name and apologized for disturbing me. She explained that I was being transferred and showed me all of my personal items in a bag. She helped me into the wheelchair, wrapped me in a blanket, and wheeled me away. She helped me transition into the next room as well.

I will always remember Salena’s thoughtfulness, camaraderie, and her interaction with my family. She assured them that I was in good hands and that she would watch me like a hawk. She made do on this promise; every so often, I saw her through the window. When she wasn’t at the window, she was in the room. She gave me my meds on time, provided an extra pillow for comfort, and kept the joke telling to lighten my mood. These are true Patch Adams qualities! A smiling and happy patient is a healing patient!
