She gave time, she gave love, she created peace, she created memories, she allowed someone’s last breaths to be covered in prayer with their hand held.
I know we have all had those days when we don’t sit down, every phone is ringing, and the alarm is beeping nonstop. Today was one of those days, and in the middle of the beeping and running, Sabrina created a beautiful, peaceful memory for a family.

Not a family in the room, not even a family in the state, Sabrina made sure a family in New York got to be a part of their loved one’s last moments, regardless of the distance. In the middle of it all, she stopped and slowed down and honestly brought a little bit of church to that hospital room.

I responded to a pump that was beeping, and I called to ask Sabrina if I needed to take the antibiotic down. She simply replied that that would be great. I didn’t have a clue what she was in the middle of until later. The chaplain came to tell me not one, but multiple sacred encounters Sabrina created today.

The patient’s family wasn’t going to be able to make it before the patient passed away. She FaceTimed the family in New York and allowed them something they will never get back: time with their loved one. She made six handprints of the patient and had them mailed to New York, which allowed them to have a physical reminder of their loved one.

She sat next to his bed, held his hand, prayed for him, and sang to him. As he took his last breath, she was his family. She knew this patient for less than 12 hours, but the way she cared for him and his family made it seem as if she had known him her whole life.

She didn’t get lunch today; she hardly saw anyone today; she gave so much more than she got. But I hope she knows that in the middle of the beeping and busyness, she was seen. She gave time, she gave love, she created peace, she created memories, she allowed someone’s last breaths to be covered in prayer with their hand held.

She lived our mission today. She embodied our values today. She worked as God’s hands and feet today, and the result was so beautiful.
