As my family dealt with the devastation, her care and compassion were unmatched.
After my father's diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer, he was brave enough to start chemotherapy along with Immunotherapy. After his first treatment, he was very ill and required a visit to the emergency room. He was admitted to the 6th floor, where he received great care, but he declined rapidly. They moved him swiftly to the ICU. All the nurses in this unit were fabulous. But Sabra Feather was exceptional. As a fellow health care provider, I was concerned and confused about the plan for his care. Sabra reached out to all of the physicians involved in his care and requested that they come speak with my family and me. It was so helpful for us to understand his plan of care and what to expect moving forward. On a Thursday morning, Sabra came in to greet my father with no real verbal response. She initiated stroke protocol, and he was down for a CT scan of the brain. The CT scan led to an MRI from which we learned his cancer had spread to his brain. The next morning, Sabra asked my father, who was unaware of the cancer spreading, how he was doing. He said, “I want to go home.” Sabra shared this information with me and encouraged my family and me to have the hard conversation about his future treatment. My father decided to discontinue treatment and live his last days at home. Sabra immediately got the ball rolling with hospice so that we could have him home before the weekend started, and we would not have to wait until Monday. As my family dealt with the devastation, her care and compassion were unmatched. We were able to get him home with everything we needed to care for him in his final days. My father passed on shortly thereafter. I am so thankful for the time we had with him at home. We owe it all to Sabra and her compassion and empathy for my father and family.
