He showed compassion and caring that was very touching to witness. He looked our son in the eye when he spoke.
This nurse was our adult son's nurse when he was having his first episode of mania in the Advent Shawnee Mission ED. He had been held there and was not happy. The nurse was the only one who took the time to really find what our son wanted and needed. He took the time to determine what he could do to help our son understand his options. He showed compassion and caring that was very touching to witness. He looked our son in the eye when he spoke, came close to his bed (and did not loiter in the doorway), he asked before doing anything (instead of treating our son like a prop), he sympathized with his concerns; "yeah, I would be feeling that way too if that happened to me” instead of dismissing him as crazy. He took the time to sit with us and explain what the delays were, what our son's options were, how quickly any transfer would be made (NOT QUICKLY AT ALL), who could help us in the ED, and what we could do to support him. I know this nurse was slammed with caring for TEN patients that day. I know it would have been quicker and easier not to slow down and do all of this extra, thoughtful work. But he did it. The only regret we have is that he was not there every shift to care for our son. I just want him to know how much we appreciate him. It was a very scary time in our family. We had not dealt with this ever before, and it was simply terrifying (the paranoia and delusions). Ryan made us feel like we did the right thing by bringing him in, and by showing up and supporting him, we continued to do the right thing. That is all any parent wants to hear in this situation.
