Rosemarie Skulski worked with me and my wife after my wife’s c-section. She was an amazing resource for knowledge - I asked many questions, and she always had detailed explanations of what was happening with the baby. She was also great at teaching us essential parenting survival skills. For instance, she carefully explained swaddling in a way that was straightforward to follow. As part of this, she demonstrated and highlighted a few key and subtle tips - like how exactly to tuck the blanket in so that our little Houdini couldn’t get her first arm out while the second arm was swaddled. There are so many times that she helped us that I’m surely forgetting some of the important ones, but as another story, she helped us get started with breastfeeding. She showed my wife how exactly to position both her hands to support our baby and the breast. This was complicated by the fact that our baby was breech, so her feet were popped up, which meant that some of the positions for feeding were more difficult or wouldn’t work. Rose navigated us through these challenges with compassion, consistently reminding us that these difficulties were very normal. My wife remarked to me after Rose’s help that breastfeeding can feel like a difficult public performance, but my wife never felt that way with Rose’s help. As one last story, when my wife was learning how to use her breast pump for the first time, Rose made her a pumping bra by cutting some holes in fabric and did so in a kind and funny way that made the pumping much more approachable.
