Whether she is caring for a patient, supporting a colleague, or simply giving directions to a visitor in the hall, Rosa consistently goes above and beyond for everyone.
I am writing to wholeheartedly nominate Rosa Montemarano, RN, from HTP 6S for the prestigious DAISY Award. Rosa consistently demonstrates the extraordinary, compassionate, and skillful care that this award was created to honor, going above and beyond to make a profound difference in the lives of her patients and their families.
Since the beginning of her nursing career, Rosa has practiced with a philosophy of treating the whole person, caring for both body and mind. Her deeply compassionate and patient-centered approach is perfectly illustrated by her recent interactions with one of our long-term patients, affectionately nicknamed B. Over the last few years, B has had repeated readmissions, and with each hospital stay, his health and spirits have noticeably deteriorated.
Sensing the emotional burden of his most recent admission, Rosa made it her personal mission to lift B’s spirits. She creatively asked him if he wanted to help her pull a lighthearted prank, and he enthusiastically agreed. Rosa carefully strung together a long chain of gloves, tucked them back into the box, and then asked another nurse to help her reposition B. When her colleague reached for a pair of gloves, the entire chain began to emerge, like a scarf from a magician's sleeve.
The prank worked beautifully. B burst into a deep, genuine laugh—a sound we hadn't heard from him in a very long time. He exclaimed, “We pranked you! I was in on it!” This simple, creative act of connection had a tremendous impact, creating a moment of joy and humanity that B will surely cherish.
This is just one of countless examples of how Rosa brings exceptional care and compassion to her practice. She possesses a presence that brightens any room, and her patients’ faces light up when she interacts with them. Beyond her clinical duties, Rosa serves as the Chair of our Unit-Based Council, where she proactively arranges fun activities to help her peers connect on a more personal level outside of work, strengthening our entire team.
Whether she is caring for a patient, supporting a colleague, or simply giving directions to a visitor in the hall, Rosa consistently goes above and beyond for everyone. Her actions are a testament to the power of human connection in healing and perfectly exemplify the extraordinary nursing that the DAISY Award celebrates. She is a true asset to our team and the entire organization.
