From greeting patients first thing in the morning with a friendly, comforting smile to his energetic “see ya tomorrow” as he leaves at the end of his shift.
This nurse has demonstrated compassionate care to patients across COBH, but his consistent presence, his patience, and his expertise are especially appreciated on Unit 1 B. He recognizes that patients are impacted by the attitude staff bring to work with them. From greeting patients first thing in the morning with a friendly, comforting smile to his energetic “see ya tomorrow” as he leaves at the end of his shift. Patients know he cares about them. He is a great role model to patients and to staff for his professionalism, thoroughness, and caring. His clinical skills are excellent, and he is always ready to answer patient (or staff) questions about meds or medical concerns, or he will take the time to find the answer and share it with the person later. He treats patients with respect and expects them to treat each other with respect. When available, he is always willing to be the second staff for fresh air breaks and often joins patients in a round of basketball, plays chess, or a card game, or takes a walk with patients. He encourages patients to be consistent with medications and follow medical advice, and teaches patients how to manage breakthrough symptoms with positive coping skills. This nurse is very good at de-escalating tense situations and accepts ownership if it is something he has done that was the trigger for behaviors. It is not always an easy task to support patients recovering from mental illness, to give the patients space to be themselves, to be genuine and natural with patients who are pushing staff limits, while still trying to attend to the patient’s clinical needs, but he does this exceptionally well. While some might say this is just an expected part of the nurse’s role, he goes above and beyond the expected; he is extraordinary and committed to excellence.
