I wasn't sure I would survive. And then I met Rochelle.
Before this surgery, I carried more than a tumor at T11. I carried fear shaped by a painful experience at another facility, fear of being dismissed, rushed, or unseen during the most vulnerable moment of my life.

This was my first surgery, and walking into the hospital felt like walking into a storm. I wasn't sure I would survive. And then I met Rochelle.

From the very first hour on the NOC shift, her presence changed everything. She offered not just clinical care, but comfort, knowledge, and a level of compassion that steadied both my mind and my body. She didn't just complete tasks; she created safety.

Rochelle listened deeply. When I expressed anxieties from my previous hospitalization, she didn't brush them aside; she validated them. She reassured me with calm, clear explanations: every medication, every assessment, every step of the process. She made sure I understood what was happening to my body and for my body, which gave me back a sense of control I hadn't felt in days.

She was extraordinarily patient with me, especially when pain made getting in and out of bed feel impossible. She never rushed me. She never made me feel like a burden. Instead, she matched her pace to mine, which helped my confidence and mobility return faster than I expected. Her gentleness made me brave.

She advocated for me without hesitation. When I requested a full bath and wipe-down before surgery, something that mattered to my dignity, even if small, she made sure it happened. She helped me feel human at a time when fear threatened to take that from me.

What moved me most was how she cared not just for me, but for my family. When they asked questions, she explained in a way that they could understand, easing their fear while protecting my autonomy. She was the anchor all of us needed.

In every interaction, Rochelle demonstrated what extraordinary nursing looks like: compassion without condescension, patience without frustration, clinical excellence without losing humanity. She created an environment where I could heal not only physically, but also emotionally. Her care transformed a terrifying experience into one where I felt supported, respected, and truly seen.

I had many wonderful providers during this hospitalization, but Rochelle was the one who made me feel like I had an ally, not just a nurse. She brought comfort when I felt broken, confidence when I felt small, and peace when I felt afraid.

If the DAISY Award stands for exceptional compassionate care, then Rochelle embodies it in every way.
