A preceptor often serves as a new nursing employee’s first impression of the hospital unit. If that relationship is not positive or supportive, it can negatively affect the orientation experience and may contribute to an employee leaving the organization prematurely.

I had the privilege of having Rob as my Preceptor. I appreciated how thorough yet calm he was, with a positive attitude throughout the challenges. His patience is a great asset. He took the time to explain policies and ensured that I understood. He was always available to answer questions.

When I spoke with other nurses he was precepting during orientation, I got the same response from all of them. I believe that with preceptors like Rob, a high retention rate is reachable. All new nurses and employees should be given every opportunity to be mentored by Rob.
