River Troutman
River Troutman consistently demonstrates the compassion, professionalism, and patient-centered care that exemplify UPMC’s mission and values.
One experience in particular stands out to me. We were caring for a critically ill patient in cardiogenic shock who required an emergent TAVR. The patient had a Swan-Ganz catheter, was connected to a Vigileo monitor, and his condition was rapidly deteriorating. As preparations were being made for surgery, the room quickly filled with what felt like every specialty involved in his care. There were physicians, nurses, anesthesia providers, perfusionists, and countless others all focused on stabilizing the patient and coordinating the next steps. The atmosphere was understandably hectic, with everyone’s attention centered on the lifesaving interventions taking place.
In the midst of all of the monitors, medications, procedures, and conversations, River noticed something that everyone else had unintentionally overlooked—the person in the bed.
While the rest of the team worked urgently around him, River took the time to ask the patient how he was doing. He spoke not only with the patient, but also with his wife, asking thoughtful questions about where they were from, their lives, and what was important to them. For those few moments, the patient and his wife were no longer just observers to a whirlwind of medical activity. They were seen, heard, and treated as people.
River’s calm presence and genuine curiosity brought comfort during one of the most frightening moments imaginable for that family. He established trust through empathy and emotional support while maintaining professionalism and seamlessly working alongside the interdisciplinary team. His actions reminded me that excellent nursing is not only about technical skill—it is about human connection.
River possesses the kind of compassion that cannot be taught. His instinct to care for the person behind the diagnosis, even in the most chaotic clinical situations, is what will make him an exceptional nurse. I have no doubt that he will continue to positively impact the lives of his patients and their families throughout his career.
