During manager rounding, I had the opportunity to speak with a patient’s mother, and she shared something that truly stood out. She mentioned that her birthday had recently passed and, like many of our long-term families, it was spent here in the hospital away from home and normal routines. As we talked, she became emotional when she shared that one of the most meaningful parts of her birthday was a meal that Rick Griffin had prepared for her.

He not only made her food but also sent her home with leftovers. She described it as the best part of her birthday. She is vegan and hasn't had amazing home cooking conducive to her diet in a long time because she has been here caring for her child. Hearing this was incredibly impactful. In a time when so much feels uncertain and far from normal, this simple act of kindness created a moment of comfort and normalcy for her. It was clear that this gesture meant far more than just a meal; it was a reminder that she was seen, cared for, and supported.

We truly provided family-centered care. Rick’s background as a chef makes what he does even more special, but what stood out most was the intention behind it. This was not just about food; it was about compassion, connection, and going above and beyond for a family who has been with us for an extended time.
