He truly did everything he could do to save her life or at least prolong it until my sister arrived from DC.
I’d like to nominate Ramone, the night shift nurse in the ICU. My mom had chronic renal failure, for which she received dialysis, as a result of uncontrolled diabetes. She had several hospitalizations over the last few years, and we didn't know which event would take her. All the staff who worked with my mom were professional and caring, but when Ramone came on duty and took over my mom's care, I knew she was in exceptional hands. Ramone took the report without judgment of her chronic condition and began to work. He made our family feel comfortable leaving her for a few hours to sleep, knowing he would contact us if something changed. My brother received a call several hours later informing him of my mother’s decline. She was on multiple medications to treat her blood pressure and hypoglycemia, but she wasn’t improving. When we arrived, it was clear this would be the day we lost our mom. The main point here is that despite her condition, Ramone didn’t treat her as such. He treated her with such kindness and respect. He truly did everything he could do to save her life or at least prolong it until my sister arrived from DC. My mom eventually passed away with all her family by her side. It was such a beautiful death, and we will be forever grateful to the nurse who cared enough to allow us to say our final goodbyes. If it had been for his knowledge and expertise, it would have been a very different experience. Thank you, Ramone, for being my mom’s nurse that night. You made a difference in our lives.
