If there is one sentence to describe Raji, it is 'caring for the caregiver' as nurses, we spend our lives and careers caring for a multitude of patients, some of whom have such serious, chronic, and demanding conditions. We are expected to be our best selves every day and give all we have mentally and physically during our workday. Nurses often have stressful environments and heavy workloads. This can result in compassion fatigue. There isn’t a day that Raji works that healthy snacks are not prepared on a table for anyone to enjoy. Her daily spread can include anything from nuts, crackers, and some homemade food from her Indian background. But what really surprises me is that she carefully prepares and puts out fruit, and with kindness and compassion, gently prepares cut-up pieces for anyone who needs something quick on the run. I often commented on her doing this daily task, and her response is “it is my job to care for everyone and make sure that the nurses have what they need to care for others”. It was her birthday celebration, and the staff prepared a nice lunch for her and her family. Though we were celebrating her day, she turned to me and apologized for not having fruit prepared. With her commitment to the patients and support of the nursing staff and servant leadership, I would like to recommend Raji for a DAISY Award.
