I am honored to recognize Rachel Matthews because she exemplifies what compassionate, supportive, and effective nursing leadership truly looks like every single day.

As our clinical manager, Rachel consistently creates an environment where staff feel valued and empowered to provide excellent patient care. Even though our clinic is an off-site location in Montgomery County, MD, while our office is based in Washington, DC, she makes it a priority to stay connected, present, and responsive to the team’s needs.

She frequently visits our location to check in, provide updates, and ensure that staff feels supported. Even when she is not physically present, she is always available by phone and responds quickly whenever we need guidance or assistance.

What sets her apart is her deep commitment to the success and well-being of her staff. She has personally encouraged me while I pursue my studies and consistently motivates our team to continue growing professionally. If our site needs supplies, resources, or operational support, she works hard to obtain them and follows through on issues until they are resolved.

During her maternity leave, she demonstrated exceptional foresight and leadership by ensuring our site is fully prepared for her absence. She organized coverage, made sure payroll processes were in place, and clearly communicated whom we should contact for urgent needs. Because of her planning, our team continues to function smoothly without disruption.

Shortly after she returned, our location closed and transitioned to a new site. This was a significant change for our team, but she immediately stepped in to ensure the transition was as smooth as possible. She made it a priority to be present, helping staff adjust, answering questions, and supporting us through the move. Her leadership during this time helped reduce stress and allowed us to stay focused on patient care.

Our manager creates a supportive, responsive, and compassionate work environment where staff felt heard and valued. She leads by example, advocates for our needs, and ensures that our team has the tools necessary to provide high-quality care for our patients.

For these reasons, I strongly believe she exemplifies commitment, excellence, and compassion, qualities recognized by the DAISY Nurse Leader Award.

Thank you, Rachel, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
