Having not met his goal of dying at home, at least he had a nurse like Rachael who took the extra time to arrange for his dog to visit.
It is an honor to observe moments like this in person.
One Sunday, Rachael recognized her patient was imminent. She had taken the time to get to know Mr. W. enough to know that he wanted to die at home so he could be with his St. Bernard, Hawkeye.
After getting him settled and ready for the day, Rachael called his wife and arranged for her to bring Hawkeye in to visit, even though Mr. W. was non-responsive.
With a room filled with family and a giant St. Bernard, Mr. W. began to perk up. He was awake, responsive, and was able to express his gratitude to Rachael for allowing him time with his precious pup.
Although there were some excited barks heard outside the room, the staff did not seem to mind. It was a beautiful moment that Mr. W.'s family will remember.
He died that Monday at Crouse. Having not met his goal of dying at home, at least he had a nurse like Rachael who took the extra time to arrange for his dog to visit.
In the memory of Patrick, Rachael is beyond deserving of this special recognition: this story would make Patrick and his family so very proud.
