Her dedication gave us, as parents, the hope and reassurance we desperately needed. Knowing J was in Nurse Petra’s care brought us peace — we always felt she was in the best hands.
Nurse Petra made a lasting impact on our daughter J and our entire family during her time in the NICU. From day one, she believed in J’s strength and potential, even when the diagnoses seemed discouraging. Our daughter was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 — a diagnosis that many saw as a death sentence. Often, we felt that others gave up on her before giving her a chance. But not Nurse Petra. She looked beyond the diagnosis and saw J. She continued to believe in her, advocate for her, and pour into her care with hope, heart, and determination.
She championed every bit of J’s progress, celebrating milestones big and small, and went above and beyond to support her development. While others might have defaulted to tube feeding, Nurse Petra took the time and care to bottle feed J, patiently working with her and cheering her on. She also took it upon herself to do additional physical therapy to help loosen J’s hips and support her motor development. J’s hands were especially tight, and Nurse Petra gently massaged them, placed cushions to encourage her to keep them open, and celebrated every tiny improvement with us like it was a major victory.
Beyond the incredible care she gave to J, Nurse Petra made sure we were equipped and confident as parents. She taught us all of J’s cares before discharge, walking us through every detail so we would feel more than prepared to take her home. She was also our nurse during our “room-in” night, and her thoroughness and support gave us a real sense of peace and readiness for the transition. Thanks to her, we didn’t leave the NICU feeling scared — we left feeling empowered.
