Peggy listened, she cared, but mostly she made me feel seen and heard.
This is the second time I have nominated Peggy Spangler for a DAISY Award, as she demonstrates superior clinical skill and compassionate care, and deserves to be recognized prior to her retirement in May. In March of 2022, as a first-time mom, I entered labor and delivery at just 32 weeks, terrified, unable to explain how I felt, and very lost. In walked Peggy Spangler, the literal walking definition of everything a nurse should be. Peggy listened, she cared, but mostly she made me feel seen and heard. Peggy never left my side during my 8-day stay and always checked up on my child and my family as we navigated the NICU.

Fast forward to literally 3 years and one day later. I once again found myself back at WakeMed Cary this time for an elective C section, once again early. I had messaged Peggy letting he know, and she immediately went into action. I walked through the doors at 5:30AM, crying after the registration woman asked me how I was, and the first face I see? Peggy Spangler. She was there waiting for me and sat by my side, even placing an IV after others couldn't. As I got wheeled back to the OR, again, Peggy was by my side. As I got taken into the OR and away from my husband, who held my hands for literally 30 minutes as I squeezed them to death and constantly kept repeating "you're ok, you've got this"? Peggy Spangler. As I got taken back to postpartum, a familiar voice once again entered my room, checking in on us and just chatting to ensure we were ok. It was once again, Peggy Spangler.

Peggy is retiring in May, and the loss that will occur at WakeMed Cary is one that will be great. They do not make nurses like Peggy anymore. Nurses who show up, nurses who educate, nurses who show compassion and care not only to their patients, but also to their entire families. Every single nurse I come into contact with has said how Peggy influenced them/their career, and the same I am sure can be said for every patient. I urge you to consider Peggy for this award, as a patient, I have now filled this out for her twice, and genuinely believe she is the most worthy nurse there could be.
