Despite being a closed and high-acuity unit, the team consistently finds ways to go beyond the traditional nursing role.
In the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Saudi German Hospital Riyadh, compassion and teamwork are not just values — they are a way of life. Every day, the PICU team demonstrates an unwavering commitment to relieving the suffering of their young patients and supporting families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
Despite being a closed and high-acuity unit, the team consistently finds ways to go beyond the traditional nursing role. Guided by the hospital’s mission of “Caring Like Family,” the PICU nurses combine advanced clinical skills with creativity, empathy, and cultural sensitivity.
Integrity, Respect, and Compassion in Action
The team continuously strives to create an environment that embodies integrity and respect for patients and families. One heart-warming initiative began when nurses noticed that children in isolation often felt bored and anxious from long hospital stays. Rather than accepting this as part of the hospital routine, the nurses introduced the “PICU Fun Box” — a collection of coloring materials and art supplies funded personally by the staff. They displayed the children’s artwork on a special board, turning sterile walls into a gallery of hope and joy. This simple act transformed the emotional well-being of young patients, bringing smiles and strengthening the bond between nurse and child.
Another example of their commitment to patient dignity and cultural respect came from mothers who expressed discomfort while breastfeeding in isolation rooms without adequate privacy. The nurses raised the concern, collaborated with infection control and facilities, and successfully installed safe, disinfectable curtains that ensured privacy without compromising safety. This project received appreciation from families and became a model for culturally sensitive patient care within the hospital.
Excellence Through Teamwork and Dedication
The PICU team lives the SGH values every day — from teamwork and accountability to education and innovation. They created a “Start–Stop–Continue–Improve” board to reflect on their practice, fostering continuous improvement and unity. This tool serves as a daily reminder to “work in silence, love each other, and care like family.”
Their dedication has not gone unnoticed. In 2024, the PICU team proudly celebrated one DAISY Awardee and two nominees, along with staff members recognized through multiple Patient Experience thank-you letters, Caring Like Family awards, and heartfelt Google Reviews from grateful parents praising their compassion and professionalism.
Impact Beyond the Bedside
What sets this team apart is their holistic view of care — healing both body and spirit. Through creative initiatives, family-centered collaboration, and tireless professionalism, the PICU team continues to elevate the patient and family experience, reduce anxiety, and uphold cultural and ethical standards. Their unity, innovation, and deep sense of humanity truly embody the heart of nursing excellence.
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Saudi German Hospital, Riyadh, stands as a shining example of what it means to be a DAISY Team — a group of nurses who transform challenges into opportunities, care into connection, and moments into miracles.
