Paula Black, RN
My mother collapsed at home. 911 was called, and she was rushed to Piedmont Fayette, where she underwent emergency surgery. An ulcer had eroded through her stomach, and her stomach ruptured, causing a life-threatening situation.
I was scheduled to work Christmas night, and as a charge nurse on this unit, I find it extremely difficult to find coverage. Christmas is a highly anticipated holiday, as everyone wants to spend it with family and friends, but without hesitation, Paula volunteered to cover for me so I could be at my mother’s side. She took time away from her own family and only son on Christmas so that I could be present for my mother, who is my absolute best friend.
She will never know how much this meant to me, and I will forever be grateful. Paula is an amazing nurse and exemplifies teamwork on a daily basis, helping the unit and staff when needed. Paula is the first one at your side when hands are needed, and this recognition is well deserved.
