I am honored to nominate Paul Kang for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. Paul has been an invaluable member of our PACU family for the past three years. He began his journey as a staff nurse, quickly advanced to relief charge nurse, and now excels as one of our highly respected charge nurses. Throughout his career progression, Paul has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication, and commitment to both patients and staff.

What makes Paul truly exceptional is his unwavering willingness to help others and his ability to seamlessly balance multiple responsibilities. He consistently prepares the department for success by opening patient care spaces and admitting patients before incoming nurses arrive, ensuring a more equitable workload and preventing back-to-back admissions. His support extends beyond leadership duties; he willingly cleans patient bays, assists with patient transfers, and steps in wherever help is needed, always maintaining a positive and encouraging attitude.

Paul is an outstanding problem solver who approaches challenges with efficiency, confidence, and composure. Staff and leadership alike rely on him because of his remarkable dependability and commitment to the team. He expertly navigates multiple phases of perioperative care, including Pre-Op, PACU, and the New Tower, stepping into whichever area requires support. He frequently assumes assignments to provide meal and rest breaks, helps ensure staff can leave on time, and adapts effortlessly to changing operational needs. His flexibility and dedication have a significant positive impact on both patient care and staff morale.

In addition to supporting staff, Paul is deeply committed to providing an exceptional patient experience. He takes the time to speak with patients and their families, addressing concerns with empathy and professionalism. When challenges arise, Paul actively engages in service recovery efforts, listening attentively, resolving issues promptly, and ensuring patients feel heard, respected, and cared for. His ability to turn difficult situations into positive experiences reflects his commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.

Paul also serves as a UBT Co-Lead, effectively representing the voices of frontline staff throughout Perioperative Services. He advocates for his colleagues while fostering collaboration and positive working relationships across departments.

One of Paul's most admirable qualities is his dedication to mentoring others. He takes the time to train and support new relief charge nurses, sharing his expertise with patience, kindness, and genuine enthusiasm. His effective communication skills help team members feel informed, supported, and valued. Through his mentorship, Paul has helped develop future leaders while strengthening the overall performance of our department.

In every interaction, Paul exemplifies the qualities of an exceptional nurse leader: teamwork, accountability, flexibility, compassion, professionalism, and effective communication. Whether supporting patients through service recovery, advocating for staff, mentoring future leaders, or ensuring smooth departmental operations, Paul consistently leads by example.

I can think of no one more deserving of the DAISY Nurse Leader Award than Paul Kang. His leadership, service, compassion, and unwavering commitment to excellence embody the very spirit of this recognition. Through his dedication to patients, staff, and the organization, Paul has made a lasting and meaningful impact on our perioperative team and the lives of those we serve.

Thank you, Paul, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
