I was a patient for outpatient surgery at the Avista Adventist Hospital. My husband and I experienced a miscarriage, which required me to have surgical intervention.

Unknowingly, then, but overwhelmingly thankful now, Nurse Patti was assigned to me as my pre- and post-op nurse. From the very beginning, she expressed support and comfort for our loss that was not awkward or disingenuous. I knew instantly I was in good hands and would be well taken care of, even before she said it.

Not only did she treat me with kindness and care, but she also seemed to go out of her way to extend her kindness to my husband. She engaged in conversation with us that felt like she took an actual interest in us, in addition to providing pertinent information to keep us well-informed about what was to take place before and after my procedure.

She even mentioned the emotional impact the procedure could have on me and reminded us to take care of each other while making suggestions. She was able to keep things light and even made appropriate jokes that helped me laugh, although I was sad and nervous about the procedure.

She made helpful suggestions like accepting the "calming" medication before surgery, which helped tremendously, and warmed my body up with a warm blanket because she said patients who are warm do better during and after surgery. All while still being supportive and comforting to my husband.

After surgery, she was there with offers of applesauce and liquids to help with my recovery. I felt she took my pain report seriously and did not hesitate to help me feel more comfortable with medication and a heating pad, which is extremely important to me due to disparities in treatment that can happen towards black women in the healthcare system.

She went over instructions with my husband and me very thoroughly for a second time before we left. It felt like she was always two steps ahead of what I needed.

She truly made a difficult, unfortunate procedure seem not so dark and depressing. I am forever grateful for her and her care during this time. I really could not stop thanking her, and she clearly loves her job.
