Patrick Lopina, RN

I would like to nominate Patrick, an Emergency Room nurse, for a DAISY Award because he truly represents the compassion, patience, and dedication that define exceptional nursing care. While Patrick wasn’t my nurse during my Emergency Room visit, I had the opportunity to observe the care he provided to the patient in the bed next to me. That patient required a great deal of reassurance, patience, and communication throughout their visit, and Patrick consistently met those needs with kindness, respect, and genuine compassion. During IV placement, the patient expressed significant concern about pain he experiences during placement and that he is a hard stick. Patrick acknowledged those concerns and clearly explained the process. He explained that he needed to make one attempt before moving to an ultrasound-guided approach and ensured the patient understood the reasoning behind that decision. He did not dismiss the patient’s fears or rush through the interaction; instead, he listened, communicated, and helped the patient feel involved in their care. Once the IV was successfully established, Patrick was prompt in obtaining the patient’s pain medication and continued to address their needs.

Throughout the visit, Patrick answered every question to the best of his ability and explained things in a way the patient could understand. At discharge, the patient needed additional reassurance and had many questions about going home. Patrick never made the patient feel like a burden. He patiently walked through the discharge instructions, provided clarification, and made sure the patient felt comfortable and confident before leaving the Emergency Room. What stood out most to me was Patrick’s bedside manner. He demonstrated that nursing is not only about providing medical treatment, but also about providing comfort, trust, and emotional support during some of a patient’s most vulnerable moments. His ability to remain patient and compassionate, even during a challenging interaction, showed exceptional professionalism and dedication. As someone who works in healthcare, I understand the challenges nurses face in balancing patient needs, time constraints, and the demands of a busy Emergency Room. Watching Patrick care for this patient reminded me of the profound impact a compassionate nurse can have. He demonstrated the patience, communication, and advocacy every patient deserves. He made sure the patient felt heard, respected, and valued. Patrick’s professionalism, compassion, and unwavering patience left a lasting impression on me. Nurses like Patrick are the reason patients remember their hospital experience for the right reasons. I truly believe he deserves a DAISY Award and recognition for the exceptional care he provides.
