This case was emergent, and the energy levels were high because of the critical condition of the patient, and this nurse handled things exceptionally well.
Surgery received a call for a trauma 1-MVA requiring an exploratory laparotomy with additional procedures. This nurse immediately went and got the Belmont rapid infuser and set it up, knowing the patient likely needed blood products. When the abdomen was opened, lots of blood was noticed in the upper left quadrant, which led to the findings of a ruptured spleen. This caused the need for blood products, which the team was prepared to start infusing immediately, because this nurse was proactive in getting equipment ready prior to the patient entering the operating room. When the products were being administered, this nurse was attentive to making sure the correct documentation was done and helped with anesthesia needs. The crash cart was brought in for medications, and this nurse quickly realized the needed medication wasn't located in the crash cart and went to the hallway Pyxis to get the medication. This case was emergent, and the energy levels were high because of the critical condition of the patient, and this nurse handled things exceptionally well.
This nurse goes above and beyond being a great patient advocate. This nurse will ensure the patient has all questions answered and understands what is happening, and that they have no further questions for the surgeon or anesthesiologist. This nurse follows hospital protocols by ensuring the perioperative checklist is finished for all cases and makes sure as much as possible is completed for urgent emergent procedures. This nurse follows hospital policies and provides positive feedback when she sees room for improvement, or something is not being done per protocol. This nurse is a team player and treats family like they are just as important as the patient. We work alongside this nurse and feel they are deserving of this award. This nurse deserves recognition for always being proactive, a good team player, and a team member we can count on to stay over to help if we need it. This nurse is a strong team player and a good asset for the surgical department. I have noticed their growth as a nurse and their confidence has improved, and I am proud to say I work with this nurse. They are a trusted coworker, I trust if I need someone to talk to, and I trust her to be honest when I ask for her opinion or feedback. I appreciate having a coworker who is dependable, trustworthy, and a good advocate for all.
