Her actions were filled with quiet dignity and respect and showed an understanding that nursing care does not end when life does-it continues through how we honor our patients and support families during difficult times.
Trisha exemplifies what compassion in nursing truly looks like-not just through words, but in action, especially in moments that would be easily overlooked in a busy emergency department.
A couple of weeks ago, we cared for a patient in significant emotional distress. The noise and stimulation of the department were clearly worsening her anxiety. Without being asked, she took the initiative to go to the MRI, explain the situation, and borrow their noise-canceling headphones. That simple intervention calmed the patient and eased her distress. She saw a need and creatively solved it, preserving the patient's dignity and comfort.
Most recently, I saw Trisha caring for a patient who had passed away. She took extra time and effort to ensure the patient was clean and prepared before the family arrived. Her actions were filled with quiet dignity and respect and showed an understanding that nursing care does not end when life does-it continues through how we honor our patients and support families during difficult times.
Trisha's actions on these two occasions were incredibly touching and reminded me that being a nurse goes beyond clinical skill. She is a powerful example of what the DAISY Award represents.
