Patricia Davis (Surgery PACU nurse) is a rare and special nurse who helps everyone she touches and understands what it means to be a St. Jude nurse. Patricia is also the BLS certification teacher for St. Jude and a phenomenal PACU nurse. She frequently meets with staff members who have inadvertently let their BLS certification lapse. She often has no notice of the need, so she comes in early or stays late in order to keep everybody working.

When ChildLife contacted Patricia about a patient who wanted to become CPR certified, she didn't hesitate. She set up a time to work with this young man so that he could learn this skill that was very important to him. Yesterday, when the patient and his mother met Patricia, the goal was for him to learn to do CPR and actually successfully perform it on a mannequin. It is not easy for anyone, but for this young man, the challenge was great. He arrived with a backpack of chemo, TPN running, supplemental oxygen (just in case), and a severe case of nausea that his mother was helping him manage with a QueaseEase wand.

Tricia patiently and joyfully taught him all of the fine points of Basic Life Support, and when they finished the written test, she took him to the mannequin. It was really hard for him. CPR is physically taxing. He had to try several times before he was successful. However, with Patricia cheering him on and his momma beaming from the sideline, he triumphantly met his goal of becoming BLS certified. This is just one example of how Patricia goes out of her way to help each and every person at St. Jude, patient or employee, meet their goals and look toward a brighter tomorrow.
