Patiens even asked if I had a hot water bottle at home for my shoulder pain and when she found out we do not, gave us a few hot water packs.
I had a hysterectomy with a BSO at Magee Women's Hospital. While all the nursing staff was excellent, Patiens Pettiford in recovery - discharge area stood out. Patiens was not just excellent and professional in her work and services, but she also went above and beyond in so many different ways. My only support system is my college-aged son who took a break from college to be with me for the surgery. When Patiens realized that my son was my only family, she went out of the way to make sure that both he and I understood all the instructions and we're well equipped to take care of my needs at home after discharge.
For example, Patiens even asked if I had a hot water bottle at home for my shoulder pain and when she found out we do not, gave us a few hot water packs. She even asked about little things like if I had the right type of underwear to support my Foley catheter and helped with that. When I was unable to void at recovery, Patiens was so compassionate and encouraging and comforted me when I felt frustrated about not being able to void. Her professional service combined with her compassion for my situation really touched me. In short, Patiens embodies all the traits of a DAISY Award Honoree. She truly made a remarkable difference in my care.
