At the end of the day, Pam didn’t just care for our son, she cared for our entire family.
I would like to nominate our nurse, Pam, who cared for our son on surgery day, for the DAISY Award. Our entire experience, from our first ENT visit through surgery day, was truly incredible, but Pam stood out in a way we will never forget. From the very beginning, we felt cared for. Our surgeon met our son prior to surgery day, caught his enlarged adenoid, answered every question with patience, explained everything in detail, and most importantly, was so sweet and kind to him. That kindness continued all the way through surgery day. When we checked in, the receptionist greeted our son by name and interacted with him while checking us in. It immediately put us at ease. Then Pam brought us back, and she was absolutely amazing with him, so kind, gentle, and warm, and she truly made him feel comfortable. When our son started getting fussy while we were going over information, Pam brought him a toy car to play with, which made everything so much easier. She helped us with his johnny and thoughtfully did all the vitals on Dad first so that he would feel more comfortable when it was his turn. She answered every question with patience, explained each step in detail, and was so reassuring. After we brought our son to the OR, I was crying, and Pam brought me a cup of coffee and a box of tissues. That small act of kindness meant more than she probably realizes. While our son was in surgery, we waited in the waiting room. As soon as it was over, the doctor came out, told us how everything went, and explained all the medications and aftercare. When we were brought back in shortly after, Pam was rocking our scared, crying sweet boy in her arms like he was her own. You could truly see the love and care she has for her patients. She helped us get settled with him, was so gentle taking out his IV and removing his oxygen monitor and made sure he had plenty of popsicles. She even went to get him a stuffed animal to bring home and let him pick out his band-aids. At the end of the day, Pam didn’t just care for our son, she cared for our entire family. She walked us out to our car and let our son say goodbye to everyone, which was such a thoughtful and comforting way to close an emotional day. Pam’s compassion, patience, and genuine love for what she does made one of the scariest days of our lives feel safe, supported, and full of kindness. We will never forget her, and we are so grateful for the care she gave our son and our family.
