I would like to commend Paige for the exceptional compassion, teamwork, and clinical excellence she demonstrated during a recent shift on our 6th-floor Acute Care unit.

Paige came to our unit from the float pool, stepping into an already demanding environment. Despite not being part of our core team, she immediately integrated herself seamlessly and became a pillar of support. During the shift, one of our nurses became ill and had to leave early. Without hesitation, Paige stepped up in a way that truly exemplifies what it means to be a nurse. At the time, Paige was already precepting a new nurse who was independently managing four patients, an important and delicate responsibility that requires attention, patience, and strong clinical judgment. In addition to continuing her role as a preceptor, Paige took on four additional patients from the nurse who had to go home sick. This meant she was simultaneously supporting a new nurse, ensuring safe patient care for that nurse’s assignment, and managing a full patient load of her own under unexpected circumstances.

What stood out most was not just the volume of responsibility Paige took on, but the grace, calmness, and positivity with which she carried it. She remained composed, approachable, and supportive throughout the shift. She ensured that both her patients and the patients under the new nurse’s care were safe, attended to, and treated with compassion. She never made the situation feel burdensome to those around her; instead, she created a sense of stability during what could have easily become a chaotic and unsafe situation.

Paige's actions reflect the very essence of the DAISY Award: going above and beyond in both skill and heart. She demonstrated selflessness, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to patient care and team support. Her willingness to step up without complaint, while continuing to mentor a new nurse, speaks volumes about her character and dedication to the profession. Our unit and our patients were incredibly fortunate to have Paige with us that night. She embodies the kind of nurse who not only provides excellent care but elevates everyone around her.
