My wife and I visited the Labor & Delivery ward during a very busy night. This was our first baby, and things were progressing quickly. Paige took incredible care of us. We told her upfront that we wanted to understand what was happening -- knowledge made us more comfortable. She took that to heart, patiently explaining what was happening with a clarity and depth that was unmatched. For example, she understood the nuances of the anesthesia, the physiology of the baby and the mother's body as things progressed, and often played interpreter for the moments of high jargon. She put us at ease with a calm and competent demeanor during the most intense periods. She injected levity and humor at just the right times to keep our spirits high and anxieties low. It was clear from her rapport with the medical staff that they had a high degree of trust in her experience and judgement, and that was also reassuring. She spent as much time with us as she could, and communicated clearly when she needed to leave the room, and made sure we understood what was happening next. She made sure we got rest when we could and steered us when the big moments were coming. During our stay at UCSF, the standard of care was excellent. But Paige Abrams stood out by the depth of her knowledge, her patience, and thoughtfulness. We're so fortunate to have had her there for the birth of our baby girl.
