"Oumou sat with me and comforted me and told me that I was a good mom. Oumou told me what I was worth. I will never forget the way she made me feel about myself."
I am a PSA who works an opposite shift from Oumou, but I have worked with her from time to time. I have always found her to be positive, smiling, and giving off joyful vibes.
I have heard her speak French to patients with a language barrier, which always makes that patient feel more comfortable and confident in the care they receive at our hospital. I have heard many patients mention Oumou and the wonderful care she has provided.
On this particular day, we had a patient on the floor who underwent a C-section and gave birth early to twins. The babies had to go to the Special Care Nursery, and our patient described to me how she was feeling so lonely and sad without them, and feeling like she was not doing her best as a mother.
Our patient then described someone who was a light in her darkness...Oumou. This patient explained how Oumou came in during the night and spent extra time with her. The patient said, "Oumou sat with me and comforted me and told me that I was a good mom. Oumou told me what I was worth. I will never forget the way she made me feel about myself."
This patient teared up as she spoke about how grateful she was that Oumou made her feel competent as a mother and a woman. The patient said she wishes that Oumou would be recognized for all that she did for her. She will never forget Oumou.
Later on in the same shift, as I was wheeling a different patient out for discharge, this patient also mentioned Oumou. She said all of the staff were wonderful during her 4-day stay, but Oumou really stood out. This patient stated, "Oumou was so sweet to my family and me. She taught me all the things I needed to do for my baby, and she came in during the night with my pain medicine every time, just like she promised." This patient was so grateful she had someone like Oumou to care for her during her stay.
I have heard compliments about Oumou before, but today, to hear two different patients go into detail about their experiences with her was so inspiring to me. Oumou clearly makes a difference in her patients' lives.
