Olivia trusted her instincts, prioritized patient safety, and refused to dismiss my husband's needs when he needed care the most.
I would like to formally recognize and thank RN Olivia from the ICU at Holy Spirit Hospital for the exceptional care she provided to my husband following his triple bypass surgery.
From the moment my husband arrived in his room post op, Olivia went above and beyond in her care. She introduced herself, shared her background, and explained that she was new to the ICU floor since August and still learning the ropes. Despite this, she reassured both my husband and me that she was there for anything we needed. Her honesty, compassion, and confidence immediately put us at ease.
Shortly after arrival, my husband began experiencing significant breathing difficulty and repeatedly said he could not breathe. Olivia entered the room, immediately recognized both my husband's distress and my growing anxiety, and chose to remain with us to closely monitor his condition. I truly believe she stayed not only for my husband's safety, but also to ease my fear during a very vulnerable moment.
Approximately two hours later, my husband's blood sugar dropped to 11. Olivia immediately sought support from a more tenured nurse at the desk, asking if there was anything that could be done. She returned to the room, reassessed my husband's vitals, and noticed that his IV site was leaking fluid. She then sought out another experienced nurse who provided guidance.

There was a moment during this experience when I questioned everything happening around us, but Olivia's presence, determination, and unwavering focus on doing what was right for the patient restored my trust.
I will forever be grateful for Olivia's courage to follow her gut, her motivation to seek help even when it was not readily given, and her positivity during an incredibly stressful situation. Her actions exemplify what exceptional nursing care should look like, regardless of tenure. Holy Spirit Hospital is fortunate to have a nurse like Olivia, and I truly hope her dedication and integrity are recognized.
