My father was hospitalized this week. He just switched insurance to KP and is very unfamiliar with our ways and our system. In addition, he is hard of hearing and is very paranoid of not hearing what is going on when people talk. Nishi introduced herself to him when she came in that night. She found out that my dad is hard of hearing and made it a point to speak slowly and in front of him so they can communicate effectively. She gave him the expectations for the night and that she will be checking up on him frequently. Nishi also introduced herself to us and acknowledged and thanked us for being here. A true AIDET experience. It seriously made me feel comfortable that when I leave my dad for the night, he will be in great hands. The next day, my dad reported to me how Nishi to him is "A+". Nishi stood out to him. I asked him why. He said that she made an effort to speak to him in a way he can understand. She was tireless, made sure everything was checked and verified especially when she started blood transfusion on him. She was there most of the time, ensuring that the blood was transfusing well, that his vital signs were checked, and that he got assistance in the bathroom when needed. He sees that Nishi is very passionate about what she does and is very thorough with all the dealings of her shift to make sure all goes well.
I also saw Nishi do NKE at start of shift and at end of shift. She was in the room, introduced my dad to his new nurse and proceeded to provide the report for what happened during her shift. The communication board is updated with what the plan of the day is for my dad. I later found out that Nishi is one of the new grads and has been here for a year. I am so happy to see her thriving as one of our new RNs. This means that she was given the best orientation on the floor and had great preceptors. She is a breath of fresh air to her patients, and also to their family members. She is truly a delight to have! As a result, my dad told me that he did the right thing. He is happy he chose Kaiser Permanente to care for his medical needs. My siblings are also very impressed. My dad just thinks KP is lucky they have Nishi here because she definitely made him feel safe and comfortable. Thank you, 5 East and thank you Nishi for making your every moment count!
