Nida was sympathetic and supportive, making herself available not only to Mom, but also to our family.
My mother-in-law was a patient of Nida’s on the 4th floor. During Nida’s shift, not only was Nida my mom’s primary nurse, she was the preceptor for two people.
Nida demonstrated superior managerial skills while mentoring the two colleagues, sharing with them her knowledge & experience. Plus, she had a few more patients on the floor to oversee. She was also a role model for her preceptee & student, sharing compassion for our mom. Nida was sympathetic and supportive, making herself available not only to Mom, but also to our family. This was a difficult time for all of us as our mom made the decision to transition from active care to palliative care. Then from palliative care to end of life Hospice Care.
Not only did Nida nurture a relationship with Mom, she interacted with my sister-in-laws, their spouses, my husband, me, and our nieces and nephews (our Mom’s grandchildren). Nida answered any questions that we had. She also constantly checked in on us as we kept vigil to see what support we needed, whether it be emotional support, beverages, nourishment, chairs, or blankets.
Through all of this, Nida’s exemplary professionalism shone through! This is why our family believes that Nida is deserving of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
