Being a nurse in the emergency department can be challenging. We take care of everyone who walks in the door. The team leader in charge of the shift has the most difficult job of all. On this day Nicole was in charge of the ED on dayshift. A young child came in and quickly decompensated. Nicole jumped in to assist with the code. Throughout the process, she was an integral part of the code team. The team came together with nurses, physicians, techs, patient representatives, and respiratory to care for the patient. After exhaustive efforts, the code was called. Many of us stood there with tears running down our faces. Nicole took charge of us at that time. Pulling us aside, checking in with us, and ensuring we knew we had support. Her efforts to take care of us included getting someone from EAP in the department within an hour or two to let us debrief. She was able to tell who needed a little more help that day. A pediatric code is never easy, and this one hit many of us hard. Her leadership, how she cared for the patient and us (her team) is what a nurse and leader exemplify. She displays extraordinary care each and every day.
