Despite significant pushback and multiple barriers, Nicole refused to give up on this family. She advocated relentlessly, made phone calls, navigated obstacles, and pushed until she found a way.
Closure means everything when you lose someone you love. The pain of losing a spouse, a sibling, or a friend is something no one is ever prepared for, and in those moments, families hold onto anything that might bring them peace.

Recently, we had a patient who passed away on our unit and was transferred to the morgue before the family arrived. When the family came a few hours later to see their loved one, they were heartbroken to learn that the patient was no longer there. You could see the shock, the grief, and the pain on their faces. Nicole immediately stepped in. She introduced herself, sat with them, and gently explained what had happened.

The family shared through their tears that, according to their faith, they needed to see their loved one so the spirit could be free from the body. This was not just a request; it was a meaningful part of their beliefs and their grieving process. Despite significant pushback and multiple barriers, Nicole refused to give up on this family. She advocated relentlessly, made phone calls, navigated obstacles, and pushed until she found a way.

She didn’t see this as “extra work.” She saw it as a family in pain who needed someone to fight for them. Because of Nicole, the family was able to see their loved one and perform the ritual that meant everything to them. In one of the darkest moments of their lives, she gave them dignity, compassion, and the chance to say goodbye in a way that honored their faith and their love.

Nicole exemplifies what it means to be a Loma Linda nurse. She leads with empathy, advocates for the patients and families, and lives our values through her actions. She didn’t just do her job—she made a lasting difference in this family’s healing process. She is truly deserving of this DAISY Award.
