Nicole always solicited our input and then actually listened with the intent of working with us.
In our 140 days in the hospital, we had many wonderful nurses. Picking one was difficult, but Nicole stood out at every turn. We dealt with Nicole as our daughter's nurse, the chemo nurse, and the charge nurse. At all times, Nicole was wonderful. When we had Nicole as our nurse, she always went above and beyond for us. For example, at one of our admissions, Nicole saw me dusting the room. She came over and saw for herself that the room was very dirty. Nicole immediately called environmental services and then started cleaning the room with me. At our next admission, Nicole was in our room wiping down dusty surfaces when we came in. Her going above and beyond was common for Nicole.

Over the course of our 6 months in the hospital, Nicole always listened to whatever our concerns were and actually listened. In fact, she always solicited our input and then actually listened with the intent of working with us. If she disagreed with what we wanted, she explained herself clearly and gave solid reasons. For example, we had a horrible time with my daughter's port repeatedly getting deaccessed, her line breaking, and her chemo infiltrating. So, every time we accessed her, we had to decide how we were going to try to secure her line and protect her port. Every single time, Nicole asked us what we thought should be done. If she thought our idea was good, she did it. If she disagreed, we had a talk with her stating her reasons for disagreeing and what she thought be done and me doing the same. We then always and easily came to an agreement because Nicole genuinely considered our desire but also clearly expressed her own experience and thoughts. This kind of thing led to our daughter loving Nicole. She would hug Nicole, play with her, wave to her, and generally love having Nicole around. Our daughter was not the only one who loves Nicole and wishes all nurses could be like her.
