Nikki creates bonds with families, and her tender nature is necessary for the job she has been given.
Nicole transferred to Strong Memorial Hospital from CHOP after having worked as a pediatric oncology nurse. She is an RN through and through with the added bonus of also having her Acute Care Nurse Practitioner license. She was hired to work inpatient as one of the first 7 North pediatric oncology unit APPs covering both pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant patients. From the moment she stepped into our institution, her compassion and warm-hearted nature were instantly palpable. It's difficult to pick just one word to describe Nikki. Kind just doesn't feel like enough. She exudes empathy, grace, warmth, and affection. It is also difficult to identify one situation in which Nikki meets the criteria for the DAISY Award. She is deserving in every action she demonstrates on a daily basis. She manages, while covering the entire unit mind you (I am sure you can imagine the high acuity, responsibility, and stress of this job.), to still make time to sit and color with a child with leukemia that has been inpatient for more than a month. She creates bonds with families, and her tender nature is necessary for the job she has been given. I strongly believe that nurses like Nikki have been put on this earth for a reason. Whether she has found her reason on this earth or it has found her is unknown. I have personally witnessed Nikki sitting on a windowsill giggling with a child with cancer, red blood cells, and chemotherapy hanging. As she sits with the child, her expert eye is double and triple-checking the orders. Holding hands with a family as their son leaves this earth. It takes a special person to do this job. I am sure that our entire unit agrees that Nikki is one special nurse.
