She is open to change and has adapted to our changing pathways and priorities with grace. She always thinks in terms of how we can make things better for our patients.
Nicky is one of the most compassionate people I have ever met. For her, the patient truly is the centre of her work, and she will adapt information and support as needed by individuals. Nothing is too much trouble for her patients, and she is always willing to go the extra mile. For example, meeting patients to explain next steps at a time when they are on site already for another appointment. She is also supportive of the wider team, and the lung nurse’s office has become the hub for the respiratory department. She is the organiser of most of the respiratory team activities. She is an active trainer and is developing the team of lung nurses to succeed her, as well as supporting nursing students. She encourages a "how can we help?" culture in the team - for example, supporting our navigator to develop a resource leaflet for supporting our patients. She has particular skills in palliative care and breathlessness management and shares that expertise with the wider team to benefit patients. She is one of the pillars of the lung cancer team, which has a trust-wide reputation for being helpful and supportive. She is open to change and has adapted to our changing pathways and priorities with grace. She always thinks in terms of how we can make things better for our patients. She has taken on leadership roles at a regional level, chairing the West Midlands Lung Cancer Nursing Forum. She has used this forum to share good practice across the region and challenges us all to improve, always remembering the patient at the heart of the service. Nicky is always the person to recognise if the pathway is going too fast for someone, and that we may need to talk about adapting the pathway to their needs.
