He helped my son see that a visit to the hospital can be a positive and uplifting experience when you are surrounded by professionals, like Nick, who genuinely care and joyfully encompass what it means to be a pediatric nurse.
Nick was the nurse assigned to my 7-year-old son while we were in the ER due to a headache and vomiting. His symptoms had been getting worse throughout the day, but he was insistent against going to the hospital because he was too scared. Eventually, we knew we needed to get him seen, and he reluctantly agreed, crying the whole car ride there because he was so nervous. Upon getting into a room, my son's fear and anxiety quickly faded due to Nick's gentleness and calm demeanor.
When my son needed an IV, he clearly and calmly explained the procedure and encouraged my son on how well he handled it. He regularly checked on us as we waited, gladly assisted us, and seemed to genuinely care for my son's well-being. When it was time to be discharged, my son stated the hospital was so much better than he expected all because he had the best nurse ever, Nick.
The next day, we had to return to the hospital for a follow-up treatment. On the car ride there, my son stated that he wasn't even nervous because Nick was so kind and helpful the day before. We were overjoyed to find out that Nick was once again our nurse, my son was smiling ear to ear! Again, his calm demeanor and encouragement were such a blessing to help my son prepare to get injections in both of his legs. He comforted him afterwards and offered suggestions to help with the pain. When my son began to have a slight reaction, he was the one to notice and ask about it, showing his attention to detail and care for his patients. Before we left, my son told him, "You are the best nurse ever".
As a Mom, I cannot thank Nick enough for his compassion and empathy for my son during a stressful time. He helped my son see that a visit to the hospital can be a positive and uplifting experience when you are surrounded by professionals, like Nick, who genuinely care and joyfully encompass what it means to be a pediatric nurse. When I think of Nick, I think of the quote by Maya Angelou, "At the end of the day, people may not remember what you did or what you said, but they will remember the way you made them feel" - He made a lasting impression and we always remember the care and compassion we experienced from Nick.
