They had come to know her not just as a caring nurse and tireless advocate but also as a compassionate person who lifted them up during a difficult time.
One of my patients reached the unfortunate place where I needed to discuss transitioning from active treatment to comfort care/hospice care. After a discussion obviously fraught with emotion and tears, they did not want to leave until they got to say goodbye to his primary nurse, Neville. They described to me how important she was in his journey and the real difference she made in his treatment. She clearly had made an impact. They had come to know her not just as a caring nurse and tireless advocate but also as a compassionate person who lifted them up during a difficult time. The fact that they asked for her during this low point is a testimony to her truly humanistic and holistic approach to nursing. They were pleased that she made the effort to come up to the front of the clinic to visit with them one last time.
