I want to reach out to your team and give one of your team members the recognition that he deserves.

Nate Wemple and I had a difficult case involving a male in his 30s who had a devastating brain injury after substance abuse. Cases like this can be very difficult for families to understand and process. Nate was there for the patient’s parents, siblings, and large extended family that visited him every day.

In many of our cases, we find that families have difficult dynamics, and the loss of a loved one can often cause exacerbation of emotions. Not only was Nate present for every one of this young man’s family, but he also did it in the most compassionate way. He was able to approach them individually and showed them understanding and gave them grace.

This young man’s family decided to participate in Gift of Life. Nate was there for both sides, helping them process this information and understand the next steps. Unfortunately, he was unable to donate, but Nate made sure this young man’s dying process was as peaceful as he could. His focus was not only on the young man and his needs; he was also able to advocate for and support the family.

Not only was he an amazing nurse to his patients, but I have also watched him with his coworkers. He is always checking in on them, making sure they have what they need, and he never lets anyone’s, patient’s, visitor’s, or coworker’s needs go unaddressed.

When you look up the DAISY Award, recipients must be person-centered, show empathy, have trust and teamwork, have admirable qualities, and have listening and understanding skills. I have worked in health care for 25 years, and I can honestly say that I have not come across another nurse who fits those qualities as Nate does. I would challenge anyone to spend 5 minutes with him and watch how he works. His compassion and empathy are compelling and make you want to be a better provider.

Thank you, Nathan, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
