She explained what happened and explained what the doctors had said until I could wrap my head around it. I was panicked and thousands of miles away from my son. I remember her voice and her reassurance. She was so kind.
“I have to tell you about my experience at your hospital. My son was in an accident. I live across the country and I got a call from a nurse at your hospital early Sunday morning. I talked to the nurse Nancy and a bunch of doctors. My son was going to surgery right away. I didn’t remember half of what the doctors said, but I remember Nancy staying on the phone with me until I could get my thoughts together. She explained what happened and explained what the doctors had said until I could wrap my head around it. I was panicked and thousands of miles away from my son. I remember her voice and her reassurance. She was so kind.
I called the hospital so many times in between flights to California. On one of those calls, I realized I didn’t know how to get to the hospital. Nancy asked if I could write the address down, but I was in the middle of boarding my next flight. I think she could tell I was flustered because she just told me something like this - it’s ok if you can't write this down right now, this is what we’re going to do. You are going to hang up the phone and get on that plane. I’m going to call you back and leave a voicemail with all the information you need to get to your son. And she did, she called me back and left me a voicemail with the address, directions from the airport to the hospital, told me where to check in, what floor to go to and how to get to him. She also kept her promise to call me after his surgeries. Even though I was still miles away from him when I got to the airport, I received a voicemail from Nancy telling me how he was doing. She told me he was ok and to get there safely. I cannot tell you how much that meant to me. I knew he was ok with her, she felt like another mom.
I got to the hospital after she was gone. The next morning, Nancy came back. She introduced herself, and all I could do was hug her and cry in relief. She was my angel. After that, she told us what was next and helped us figure out what had happened to him. We had so many more questions. He didn’t have his ID, and no one knew who he was. He was alone in the hospital all night. I don’t know how she did it, but she figured it out, and we were able to get to him.
I knew Nancy was a good nurse, but I was even impressed with how she handled my son. When he finally started waking up, he wasn’t following directions and was giving the nurses a hard time. She was direct with him, put him in his place but also joked with him. She was exactly what he needed. She made sure he knew the seriousness of his accidents and explained everything to him. Overall, I give you 12/10 stars for your hospital. I can’t thank you enough for taking care of our son. Nurse Nancy you are in the right profession, you were meant for this and you are my angel. With gratitude for all you do.
